Tags

Organize your archived posts with a flexible tagging system.

Overview

Tags let you categorize and filter archived posts across all platforms. Create custom tags, assign colors, and use them to quickly find related content in the Timeline View.

TIP

Tags are stored in the YAML frontmatter of each note, making them portable and searchable with standard Obsidian queries.

Managing Tags

Open Tag Manager

Access the Tag Manager in two ways:

  • Header button: Click the tag icon in the Timeline header bar (next to the archive button)
  • Post card button: Click the tag icon on any individual post card

The header button opens the Tag Manager in global mode (manage all tag definitions), while the post card button opens it in post mode (assign/remove tags for that specific post).

Create a Tag

  1. Open the Tag Manager from any post card
  2. Type a new tag name in the search field
  3. Click Create "[tag name]" to create and assign it

INFO

Tag names are case-insensitive. "Travel" and "travel" are treated as the same tag.

Edit Tag Properties

Each tag can be customized with:

  • Name: The display label shown on chips
  • Color: Choose from a preset color palette to visually distinguish tags
  • Sort Order: Control the display order in the Tag Chip Bar

Click a tag's edit icon (pencil) to modify these properties.

Delete Tags

  • Single tag: Hover over a tag row and click the delete icon (trash). This removes the tag definition and unassigns it from all posts.
  • Delete All: Click the Delete All button in the Tag Manager title bar. A confirmation dialog appears before proceeding.

WARNING

Deleting a tag removes it from all posts in your vault. This action cannot be undone.

Assigning Tags to Posts

From the Tag Manager

  1. Click the tag icon on a post card to open the Tag Manager
  2. Click any tag to toggle it on/off for that post
  3. A checkmark indicates the tag is currently assigned
  4. Close the modal — changes are saved automatically

Remove from Post Card

Each tag chip displayed on a post card has a small X button. Click it to remove that tag from the post without opening the Tag Manager.

Tag Chip Bar

The Tag Chip Bar is a horizontal scrollable bar at the top of the Timeline View. It shows all tags with their post counts.

  • All: Shows all posts (default)
  • Tag chips: Click a tag to filter the timeline to only posts with that tag
  • Click again to deselect and return to showing all posts

Tags in the chip bar are sorted by their configured sort order and display a colored dot matching the tag's color.

Optimistic UI

All tag operations use optimistic updates for instant feedback:

  • Creating a tag immediately shows it in the list
  • Toggling a tag on/off instantly updates the checkmark and post card
  • Removing a tag via the X button immediately removes the chip from the card
  • Deleting a tag closes the modal and processes in the background

If a background operation fails, you'll see an error notice with the option to retry.

YAML Frontmatter

Tags are stored in the tags field of each note's YAML frontmatter:

yaml
---
platform: facebook
archived: 2025-01-15
tags:
  - travel
  - photography
---

This means you can also add or edit tags manually by editing the frontmatter directly.
